Sustainability

Our Actions:

Our entire estate is organic certified.

We have planted 15,000 trees on our farm and neighbourhood.

We are actively enhancing our neighbourhood's living conditions.

90% of our waste (plastic, metal, wood, paper) is recycled and all our coffee waste is being reintroduced into the coffee cycle.

We are providing employment for our surrounding community.

We are sourcing local craftmanship for the lodge and the farm.

We are sourcing vegetables from our own organic vegetable garden and local farmers.

Our Sustainability Projects

In addition to our eco-friendly coffee farming, we're all about embracing a variety of sustainable practices on our farm and within our neighboring communities.

CONSERVATION AREA PROTECTION

Picture this - Machare Coffee Estate, nestled between two rivers, safeguarded by a 40 ha conservation area teeming with a diverse mix of trees, shrubs, birds, and mammals. Our dedicated watchmen regularly patrol this area, ensuring no harm comes to this precious ecosystem from activities like tree felling, hunting, firewood collection, livestock grazing, or agricultural activities. This protected haven also serves as a corridor for wildlife coming from Kilimanjaro National Park in search of tasty fruits.

INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT

At Machare Coffee Estate, we created a biodiversity using only manual pest control and leaving the rest to nature. Our extensive ground cover not only creates a balanced environment but also offers a habitat for beneficial insects. You might have guessed it already: No chemicals are applied! We are proud to say we were the first estate in Tanzania to receive an organic certification back in 2011.

IRRIGATION & WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT

Water conservation is of great importance to us. That is why we have got 104 ha currently under drip irrigation, the most water-savvy method of farm irrigation.

We have managed to reduce our wastewater by 97 % and recycle it using an innovative system that's less carbon-intensive than most other wastewater recycling systems.

SOIL MANAGEMENT

To protect our soil from direct sunlight, drought, and hardpan formation, we have ”blanketed” 100 % of our coffee area with a variety of grasses, forming a thick layer of ground cover. This not only improves soil structure and prevents erosion but also keeps our fertilizers from leaking and it boosts biodiversity. And the cherry on top? We are proud to produce all our organic fertilizers in-house, using organic materials and microorganisms from our conservation areas.

REFORESTATION & TREE PLANTING

Over the last 20 years, we have planted more than 15,000 trees on our farm and in the surrounding area, to support reforestation and biodiversity.

ENERGY SAVING

We are constantly reducing our carbon footprint, whether it's by minimizing printing, using rechargeable batteries, installing firewood-saving stoves, or setting up a biogas unit for cooking. And when it comes to irrigation, we let gravity do the work instead of pumping in 90 % of the area.

Further Projects

We are all about recycling and reusing here. Take our nursery planting pots, for example, which have been in use for 20 years! And our plastic sheets? They're UV-proof and last for 5 years, way better than those non-UV proof one-season wonders. In addition, we also recycle and reuse metals.

Our coffee estate is nestled between two rivers, and we make sure they are well-protected. No farming, no grazing, no chopping wood, no tree felling, and absolutely no pollution. We have also got a permanent well and two seasonal ones, plus water channels running through the estate – and, of course, we take best care of them, too.

Sharing is caring: We regularly have school kids and local farmers from neighboring communities for workshops, training, and environmental education at our estate. And we also welcome visitors from around the globe throughout the year to share our knowledge and passion for coffee.

Cooking on Kilimanjaro usually means an open fire and lots of firewood. But we are changing that: We have already equipped a quarter of our neighboring households with firewood-saving stoves, cutting down firewood use by 75%!

We are not just about coffee, we also provide water projects to help our neighbors irrigate their farms.

We are helping to build micro-biogas plants for small households. Powered by manure from just one cow, these families can cook all their meals without needing firewood. How cool is that?

We're helping small farmers to produce better coffee qualities by forming Central Pulpery Units (CPU). Machare Coffee Estate assists them in gaining access to the market – and achieving better prices in the end.

Our dispensary station is like a friendly neighborhood general practitioner: It's open on weekdays to everyone living within an 8 km radius, all year round.

In addition to installing firewood-saving stoves, we have also handed out blankets to families, keeping them warm during those chilly Kilimanjaro nights and saving them from having to light an open fire.

Policy

Moshi, October 2021
Greetings from the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro! Here at Machare Coffee Estate, one of the largest and most traditional coffee estates nestled near the Kilimanjaro forest conservation area in Northern Tanzania, we are not just growing coffee. We are trying everything to grow coffee the right way - with a deep respect for human rights and the environment.
Therefore, all our standards and actions are all rooted in a common code of conduct, a reflection of our sustainability policy that you can find detailed on the following pages.
For the past 20 years, we've been rolling up our sleeves and getting our hands dirty (literally!) to ensure our coffee is produced in harmony with nature and people. We have implemented a variety of sustainability actions on our farm and in the neighboring communities. You can find these actions described in detail at the end of this policy, and we have made sure to highlight them whenever they contribute to a specific topic in our policy.
